Child sexual abuse is disturbingly common in society, although most people don't wish to talk about it or acknowledge it, let alone challenge it and work to address it. We are shouting out to everyone, EVERYONE! to come together and use their unique skills to change this unsettling reality. It doesn't matter if you have no prior experience working with NGOs. It doesn't matter if you don't know where to start. ALL THAT MATTERS is that you are driven by a dream and a hope of a safer India. Where no child should ever have to fear that the most basic of rights might be snatched away from them.
Come and be a part of a growing pan-India community and spend a few hours every week to help implement offline (Mumbai only) or online programmes at Sheradil Foundation.

Our action plan team is responsible for designing effective community-based programmes and interventions for future implementation. The planning process starts with identifying a key problem related to child sexual abuse. For example, we found that most cases of child sexual abuse that are reported to the police under the POCSO Act do not have a social worker to assist the child victim and their caregiver. As a result, it gets very difficult for them to navigate the complex legal processes involved in such a case.
To address this serious gap, we decided to understand the role of the POCSO support person in detail by reviewing available resources. We then went through relevant reports and publications by NGOs and universities to understand how the challenges in POCSO cases can be overcome with the help of a support person. This has led to the development of a case review and case handling mechanism to ensure that our social workers can provide support services to child victims.
Our outreach team is crucial to developing connections externally with both individuals and organizations. We are on the lookout for community-based NGOs in Mumbai- working in the space of education, health and nutrition for example- through whom we can conduct offline workshops with their beneficiaries to help us identify children who have faced sexual abuse.
At the same time, we are keen to connect with both individuals and organizations who have relevant expertise in this space. They can be instrumental in helping us to design robust mechanisms and effective community-based programmes that can be truly transformative for our beneficaries.
Our outreach team also seeks out influencers and well-known personalities who would like to support the cause of child sexual abuse prevention and lend their voice to amplify some of the core messages that we wish to convey to the public, including children and adults, to help make communities safe spaces for children.
Our Events team organizes online events for adults to help build awareness and sensitivity around the complex issue of child sexual abuse. We aim to teach adults how to recognize behavioural changes in children that may indicate underlying abuse, and how to respond to such situations with compassion. The aim is to ensure that adults feel empowered to have conversations with the children in their care if there is ever a chance of abuse or a disclosure of abuse by the child.
Since adults are responsible for the safety of children in their household and under their care, it is of utmost importance that adults do not engage in victim blaming and rather support the child to ensure there is no secondary trauma caused to the child victim. It's also crucial for adults to know how to handle such cases in light of POCSO Act to ensure the safety of their own children, as well as other children in the community.
Our research team members are busy grappling with fundamental questions around child sexual abuse- What sort of societal factors might contribute to sexual offending behaviour developing in individuals? Can early-level interventions help to prevent the transition to such behaviour? Are some types of therapy more effective for children based on the trauma they have faced? The research team reviews published academic literature authored by psychologists, sociologists and criminologists in their quest to gain greater clarity on such questions. Their findings then, can act as the starting point for development of innovative intervention models by the action plan team and other teams at Sheradil.
